Listening for a Change and Dominican University of California are collaborating to bring a unique Interview Project to alternative high school classrooms in Marin County. Using Listening for a Change’s Essence of Acceptance curriculum, students explore human rights and responsibilities and acquire oral history taking skills. High school students interview community members who have experienced loss of human rights and have lessons to share concerning the imperative of considering and protecting rights. In addition, students learn about the importance of resiliency and how others work to overcome struggles and become engaged community members.

Dominican University service-learning students support the classroom teachers and work directly with the high school students as mentors in this process. Dominican University students receive prior and ongoing training from the Listening for a Change staff. Together, the students are producing reflective community projects following the interview experiences.

The following videos represent portions of Marin County Community School student-conducted and filmed interviews from spring 2008 and student reflections on this experience.
